A follow up story to our original July 2014 story concerning the Leek Conservative Working Men’s Club, Staffordshire, fundraising efforts for Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

The Club’s Stewardesses, Tanis Pickford and Gwen Alcock, supported by the Club’s Committee and Members have now handed over a further cheque for £8,892 which brings the total raised for the Hospice by the Club to a staggering £96,000. It is hoped that the £100,000 barrier will be broken by the end of the year.

The fundraising is particularly personal for Tanis who lost her husband Douglas to cancer in 1999. Tanis said: “I know lots of people plough money into cancer research, but when there’s nothing left the hospice looks after people. The money has been raised through various events and activities including football card games, a Burns night, auctions, race nights and even selling chocolate trifles. We are hoping that our grand total
will be £100,000 by next year.”

The funds being raised will go towards offering comprehensive care for those in North Staffordshire with progressive, advanced disease and a limited life expectancy.

Peter Keller at the Douglas Macmillan Hospice said: “The Leek Conservative Club is a massive supporter of the hospice. The club has, once again, had a fantastic year in fund-raising as the members and staff have raised over £8,000 which we are very grateful for.”
